After two years of word of mouth props spreading like a mad virus, Prefuse 73ユs second album, One Word Extinguisher is ready to blow. When dirty south, Atlanta native Prefuse 73, aka the musical dynamo that is Scott Herren, released his debut album Vocal Studies + Uprock Narratives in 2001, followed by the 92 vs 02 Collection EP in 2002, he really freaked people out. The hip hop underground listened to that album to death, and then told their friends. Who told their friends. Stone cold impressed by his ability to deliver tough, kick-the-door-down beats to snap your neck plus vocal cut ヤnユ paste electronic innovation, Prefuse 73 made the future seem fun again. Like a place you actually wanted to go to. He paid respect to not only the history of hip hop and jazz, but to vocal styles like scat and freestyle, and then reinvented them. Further obliterating modern musical boundaries, he coerced the likes of knockout MC MF Doom and indie hero Sam Prekop to collaborate with him. No small achievement. But then, Scott Herren is no ordinary guy.

For indie and electronica heads, youユll recognise Prefuse 73 as the guy who gave Erlend Oye (Royksopp/Kings of Convenience) the best track on his recent solo album, Unrest. You may even be aware of the awesome one-off ヤWylin' Outユ 12モ Prefuse 73 produced for the Urban Renewal Project on Chocolate Industries, featuring Mos Def and Diverse, with the RJD2 remix on the flip. Others will be familiar with his gentle, multi-instrumental acoustic work as Savath + Savalas and electronix as Delarosa + Asora for labels like Hefty and Schematic, or the fact that he started the Eastern Developments label under the motto of メbringing you music we think you'll feel and understand in the same way we doモ. Over the past few years, Scott Herren has also played and produced for acts including Seely, William Carlos Williams, experimental figure heads like Hamid Drake and Samadha Trio and for legendary film director John Hughes on the Scarlet Diva soundtrack. If youユre still scratching your head trying to place him, hold tight. Thatユs all about to change.

One Word Extinguisher is a hip hop album. But thatユs just for starters. First track, ヤThe End of Bitersユ literally bounces right out the speakers, locks hands around your throat and kicks your ass before youユve had a chance turn up the volume. Itユs also a deep, sexy R&B album. A pulsing, hair-trigger intuitive electronic twitch album. Mostly all at once. It features guest MCs including Mr Lif and Diverse and production collaborations with Tommy Guerrero, Dabrye and Daedelus. Does the pace let up? Nope, One Word Extinguisher is an all over sprawling organism of thronging zig-zag, ping-pong, bada-bing explosive energy, sliced and diced with a samuriユs wisdom and precision. Itユll knock you out and bring you round again before you can say, メHoly shit! This guy is amazing!モ A phrase you should start practising, because youユre gonna be needing it.

Now resident in sunny Barcelona, Scott Herren will be touring as Prefuse 73 across the globe, starting with a clutch of Warp Ultra Dance US dates in March, a US tour in May alongside RJD2, Four Tet and Manitoba, plus stops at Sonar, Coachella and other festivals internationally.

メbehind every wall of hip hop noise there lurks a heart-bursting tune and thatユs what makes it so alluring. Itユs the William Burroughs cut-up technique applied to hip hopノ exhilaratingモ 7/10 NME

"How experimental hip hop should sound... ill bugged-out blends" Hip Hop Connection

"an effective mix of cutting-edge electronics and hip-hop sensibilities.... but it龝 the mind-bending electronics that impress most" Music Week

"isn穰 so much a leftfield perversion of HipHop as it is a restoration of the genre to its avant garde roots... this breath stealing, serrated mosaic of Muzak, HipHop, mellow grooves, jazz and blipvert electronica contains enough fragments of material to make up maybe 110 tracks [but] the indomitable HipHop groove is always more than equal to the strain" The Wire

"mighty hip hop instrumentals finely spliced with diced lyricism and drenched in early 80s electro. Delicious" Sleazenation

"some proper next level shit" 8/10 BBM

"the sort of aural gumbo that must have had James Lavelle and DJ Shadow reaching for the forms for the Dunscratchin? DJ Retirement Home.... more ideas crammed into its 60-odd minutes than most artists manage in a career" 4/5 Bang Magazine

"a superb album which seems to do something different every time you listen to it" Breakin? Point

"imagine what would have happened if Jackson Pollock ever made a hip hop beat. That龝 Prefuse 73.... there isn穰 a bad track on here and the whole thing hangs together with a rare level of coherence... Drop the electronic smart bomb baby!" Grand Slam Magazine
