1966 was an exciting time to be a music fan in Jamaica. A new sound was taking the island by storm, and producer Arthur "Duke" Reid was there to shape and nurture it every step of the way. The sound was "rock steady," and along with his talent roster that included Alton Ellis, Phyllis Dillon, the Techniques, the Melodians, and the Supersonics band led by Tommy McCook, Duke Reid crafted music that was smooth, luxurious, and instantly recognizable as coming from his studio. For the best overview of Duke Reid's rock steady output, check out Duke Reid's Treasure Chest compilation (HBEA 95/96), which includes the Melodians' "Come on Little Girl," the Paragons' "Tide is High," Phyllis Dillon's "Perfidia," and Dobby Dobson's "Loving Pauper," among many other big hits and rhythms that continue to be some of Jamaican music's most versioned. In fact, Treasure Chest is included in the book Reggae 100 Essential CDs, as are four other CDs comprised of the late Duke Reid's Treasure Isle productions.
Duke Reid had been an important figure on the entertainment scene since the 1950s with his Trojan sound system, and later, with the famous Treasure Isle recording studio on Bond Street in Kingston. To read more about the early Jamaican recording scene, the exciting sound of ska, and it's transition to rock steady, take time to read the By Special Request liner notes from compiler and Heartbeat A&R director Chris Wilson. This music was the soundtrack to his youth while growing up in Jamaica, and you'll feel the relevance and importance of these songs in his notes.
By Special Request re-opens the Treasure Isle vaults and presents 18 more vintage rock steady and early reggae gems. The renowned voices of Justin Hinds, John Holt, the Jamaicans, and the Sensations, are here along with select instrumental and DJ versions. You'll find classics like "Time Pass" by Justin Hinds, "Peace and Love" by U Roy and the Jamaicans, and "I See Your Face" by John Holt. Treasure Isle's music is regarded as the finest and highest quality rock steady, holding it's own or superceding any musical competition when it was released in Jamaica. And now, the superb production values of Duke Reid are showcased once again on this musical compilation, with superior sound quality. As always with Heartbeat, you're assured of the finest sound quality from the best sources.
