My First two productions were recorded in 1977, メDub From Creation モ and メStarship Africa モ both by Creation Rebel. As fans of reggae/dub my friends and I would spend every evening listening to new sounds coming from Jamaica. I was truly a lucky fan. I worked in PAMA ユs Soundville record shop (now Jetstar) in Harlesden during my summer holiday in 1975 at the age of seventeen. Later that same year I got involved with starting a pioneering distribution company J and A and the Carib Gems record label, where I helped select the recordings we licensed from Jamaican producers for release in the UK. During this period I met label owners, producers, singers, DJ ユs and musicians. This gave me the opportunity to run my own session. Being very inspired by the work of Augustus Pablo, Lee Perry, King Tubby, and Keith Hudson, my friend Doctor Pablo and I set out to make a dub album. For the first session we did we used the great Dennis Bovell as engineer and this resulted in the album メDub From Creation モ, released on our own Hitrun label in March of 1978. However, almost immediately we recorded another set of rhythms which would eventually become メStarship Africa モ. Also recorded in 1977, the bas player was Tony Henry of Misty in Roots. This I recently discovered was his first time in a studio. The strange thing about this album was that it was made in a backwards kind of way. We were not happy with the drums so the recordings weren ユt finished. In 1978 we met Style Scott who was introduced to us by Prince Far I. It was pre-Roots Radics and we paid for Style to fly to the UK to make Creation Rebel sound great when backing Far I live.
On this first visit we took style into the studio and overdubbed the drums. This is a very difficult thing to do for any drummer but Style is so god that it was done in almost one take.
About one year later the album was to be mixed. The tracks sounded god but a bit strange because the timing of the playing was not perfect. We decided to disguise the imperfections by turning over the 2 inch multi-track tape and mixed the tapes backwards. We added reverb and delay at random and then we turned over the mixed _ inch tape to play forwards. This resulted in the effects playing before the beat or piano or wherever we applied the effects to. The results still sound refreshing. When we first played the record to people we got some very mixed responses. David Rodigan (reggae DJ) said, メWhat the fuck do you think you are doing reggae? モ Others loved it. The album was originally was originally released in 1980 on the 4D Rhythms label. Later that same year On-U Sound was started. I ユm very proud of メStarship Africa モ and I ユm very pleased to see it re-released メRe-mastered モ and featuring here are unreleased tracks from the original session.
