In 1978-79 Creation Rebel were doing live shows in England and also Holland extensively. The band worked with Price Far I, Bim Sherman, and Prince Hammer in the capacity of a メbacking band モ but also did a pioneering live dub show.
Although the group failed to achieve great records sales (largely through poor distribution) they started to gain the attention of Radio 1 DJ, John Peel who had a hugely influential radio show each evening on national radio. At the band ユs live shows in the U.K. the audiences often included members of the Sex Pistols (P.I.L.), The Clash, The Slits, The Ruts, Generation X, and many other non-reggae bands working in the gig circuit at the time. This was the Punks Reggae Party ミ Rock Against Racism ミ The Legalize Cannabis Campaign and a feeling of optimism and for change existed. In 1979 following a sell out UK tour, Creation Rebel and Prince Hammer were invited to join the Slits on their UK tour to promote their Dennis Bovell produced album メCut. モ Also on the bill for the tour was jazz legend Don Cherry and 15 year old daughter Neneh. During the tour friendships were made. The tour was crazy. Style Scott was rushed to the hospital in Glasglow with acute appendicitis and missed the main London show where メCrucial モ Tony (the guitarist) tried to play drums in front of a sell out Rainbow audience. It was truly anarchic. At this time Ari-Up was getting more and more into the Jamaican scene. She was going to sound system dances and Blues parties. She had had dreadlocks from the age of fifteen and in 1979 at only seventeen she was becoming obsessed with rhythms, not only Jamaican but also all the New York embryonic scratch / turntable DJ ユs. I played Ari メFade Away モ by Junior Byles and Bim Sherman ユs メLove Forever モ and she said lets record some tracks and call them New Age Steppers.
Through Ari I met John Lydon and Keith Levine. Also at this time I met Mark Stewart, Bruce Smith, John Waddington, Steve Beresford, Viv Goldman, The Raincoats, and many more bands and musicians (reggae and non-reggae).
When we started work in the studio we had reggae-UK funk-free jazz and an all round original cast in the studio. New Age Steppers had the true spirit of the Punks Reggae Party. This CD was made in about one week and Ari ユs wonderful ideas and vocals still stands the test of time. This was also the first On-U record.
